Matthew Dodd is an experienced attorney whose courtroom roots run deep—he grew up watching his father practice law across the South. After earning his J.D. from the University of Utah, where he contributed to the exoneration of a wrongfully convicted individual, Matt clerked for the Utah Supreme Court. He later relocated to Montana, where he established offices in Bozeman, Big Sky, Helena, and Livingston. His practice spans criminal defense, civil litigation, and family law.
Matt is recognized for his ability to communicate complex legal issues clearly and persuasively to judges and juries. His legal skills have earned him numerous accolades, including regular inclusion as a Super Lawyer Rising Star. In 2017, he received the Appellate Advocacy Award from the National College for DUI Defense. He is also one of only three attorneys in Montana admitted to the prestigious American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.
A respected voice in legal education, Matt has spent the past decade teaching trial skills across the country. He is a frequent lecturer for the Montana Office of Public Defender and has trained many of the state’s trial judges on DUI law. His written work includes multiple published articles on trial strategy for criminal, civil, and family law cases. Alongside his father, Roger Dodd, Matt co-authored the legal guide Cross-Examination for Depositions, now in its second edition.
Matt also consults, coaches, and co-counsels with attorneys nationwide, helping elevate trial strategy and client advocacy across a wide range of legal disciplines.
